Many Russian manufacturers of technical lighting fixtures are looking at the European market

The Russian market for lighting fixtures reached a value of Rub 84.5 billion in 2016 (exchange rate RUB per EUR 2016 is 74.1632), with a double-digit increase (+13%) on the previous year, somewhat higher than the inflation rate. Imports amounted to Rub 40.5 billion, accounting for almost 50% of total consumption (previously 60%). Local production was valued Rub 48 billion, showing a very strong growth (+23%) compared to the previous year. Around 9% of it was exported (previously 12%).

Import-export over a six-year time span

On a six-year base, exports of lighting fixtures from Russia increased from Rub 2 to 4 billion. In the same time period, imports increased by 60% from Rub 25 to 40 billion. Russia is a net importer of lighting fixtures, with imports equal to Eur 584 million and exports equal to Eur 60 million. The exports are mainly directed towards Kazakhstan, Belarus and Germany (altogether reaching 73% of export share), followed by India and Ukraine. Export has been growing towards India in recent times and Kazakhstan on a longer period span. During the first half of 2016 exports registered a further 12% decrease, growing only towards Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine.

Performing products

Many Russian manufacturers of technical lighting fixtures are looking at the European market. Almost all large companies are certificated ISO 9001. Russian producers consider that the instability and the low exchange rate of Rouble could help the European countries to purchase LED lighting fixtures in Russia. In addition, all LED products manufactured in Russia have been tested in each region of Russia, from the Caucasus to Vladivostok during the past years, meaning that Russian products withstand temperatures between -40°C and +40°C. It should be noted, that the LED lighting products are in higher demand. Since 2014, there has been increasing demand for household LED-lamp with E27 base.

Sales by major districts and main market groups

The Central Federal District (including Moscow) still claims the largest share of lighting fixtures sales (34%) but its weight is far less predominant than it was ten years ago (55%). Sales in the Southern Federal District are also growing, from 10% to 12% of the total in eight years. Stable shares in Privolzhsky (11%) and the Far Eastern Federal District (6%). Top 10 players hold around 25% of the total residential lighting market. Italian producers hold an impressive market share. The structure of Russian lighting market can be divided into five main groups. The first group includes the companies having a full cycle of production such as Philips, Osram, OptoGaN, Svetlana-Optoelectronics. The second group includes the enterprises specializing in reconfiguring the production from standard sources to LEDs (Lighting Tecnologies, Beliy Zvet, Ardatov Plant). The third group are assembler of semi knock-down production, like AtomSvet, Focus, Ledel, Ferex, Leader Light, Led-Effect. The fourth group are small local manufacturers and the fifth group are Russian brands with production in China (Navigator, Kosmos, NLCO).
